The Difference Between Workplace Conflict and Workplace Bullying

One of the most common misunderstandings in workplaces is the difference between workplace conflict and workplace bullying.

While both can create stress and disruption, they are not the same thing.

Workplace conflict generally occurs when individuals have differing opinions, personalities, priorities or approaches to work. Conflict can arise between colleagues, managers and staff, or even entire teams. Importantly, workplace conflict is not automatically bullying simply because it makes someone uncomfortable.

Workplace bullying, however, typically involves repeated unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or group of workers that creates a risk to health and safety.

Examples of workplace bullying may include:

  • Repeated intimidation or threats
  • Persistent verbal abuse
  • Deliberate exclusion from workplace activities
  • Unreasonable criticism or humiliation
  • Repeated offensive conduct

Not every disagreement, performance discussion or management action amounts to bullying.

Reasonable management action carried out in a reasonable manner is generally not considered workplace bullying. This may include:

  • Performance management
  • Work allocation decisions
  • Constructive feedback
  • Disciplinary processes
  • Workplace investigations

The key is understanding the context, frequency and impact of the behaviour.

When concerns arise, organisations should assess the situation early. Addressing workplace issues before they escalate can often prevent larger problems from developing.

A respectful workplace culture encourages open communication, early intervention and fair processes when concerns are raised.

At Regional Queensland Investigations, we regularly assist organisations across regional Queensland with workplace complaints, bullying allegations, misconduct investigations and independent fact-finding enquiries.
