Desktop Investigations Queensland
Not every investigation needs to start with surveillance or field enquiries. Many matters can be advanced quickly and cost-effectively through structured desktop enquiries, open-source research, database checks, social media review, public records analysis and evidence mapping.
Regional Queensland Investigations conducts desktop investigations for private clients, lawyers, insurers, businesses, employers, councils, government agencies and organisations across Queensland.
Desktop investigations are often the smartest first step.
A desktop investigation can quickly establish whether a matter has substance, what evidence may exist, who is involved, where further enquiries should be directed, and whether field work is likely to be worthwhile.
This is particularly useful for lawyers, insurers, employers, businesses and government agencies that need early factual clarity before committing to a larger investigation. A well-scoped desktop investigation can save time, reduce costs and prevent unnecessary surveillance or travel.
What is a desktop investigation?
A desktop investigation is a structured investigation conducted using lawful information sources that can be accessed, reviewed and analysed without immediately deploying an investigator into the field.
It may include open-source intelligence, public records, ASIC and business information, property indicators, court and tribunal material, social media review, website and domain checks, online marketplace activity, corporate links, background enquiries and evidence organisation.
RQI uses desktop investigations to build a factual picture, identify leads, test claims and determine whether further enquiries are required.
When desktop enquiries are useful
- You need to locate a person, company, asset or point of contact.
- You need early intelligence before surveillance or field enquiries.
- You need social media or online evidence preserved.
- You need background checks on a person, business or entity.
- You need to identify inconsistencies in a claim, statement or history.
- You need litigation, fraud, workplace or insurance investigation support.
- You need a report that organises what is known and what remains unresolved.

Desktop investigations support larger investigations.
Many successful surveillance, fraud, workplace and factual investigations begin with a desktop phase. This phase helps identify the best locations, likely movements, relevant parties, online conduct, potential witnesses and records that should be obtained.
Without that groundwork, field enquiries can become expensive and unfocused. RQI uses desktop enquiries to sharpen the investigation strategy before time and money are spent on the ground.
Common investigation uses
- Pre-surveillance intelligence and subject profiling.
- Insurance claim review and activity indicators.
- Workplace misconduct and conflict enquiries.
- Fraud and dishonesty investigations.
- Due diligence before engaging a person or business.
- Locate enquiries and address development.
- Legal matter background checks.
- Social media and online evidence preservation.
Regional Queensland intelligence, not generic database searching
Desktop investigations are not just about typing a name into a database. Regional Queensland matters often require practical understanding of geography, local industries, mining towns, rural properties, small communities, transport routes, regional employment patterns and how people actually move and work outside major cities.
RQI combines desktop research with real-world regional investigation experience. Where desktop enquiries identify a strong lead, we can move quickly into field enquiries, surveillance, witness contact, site attendance or evidence gathering.

Our desktop investigation process
Each desktop investigation is scoped to the question that needs answering. The goal is not to collect random information. The goal is to identify relevant, useful and reportable evidence.
Scope the question
We identify the subject, issue, purpose of the enquiry, legal sensitivity, known information and intended use of the findings.
Conduct searches
We review lawful sources, public records, online material, business records, social media, entity links and relevant databases where available.
Analyse and verify
We separate useful evidence from noise, test inconsistencies, preserve relevant material and identify the strongest leads.
Report findings
We prepare a clear report, evidence summary or briefing note with findings, limitations and recommended next steps.
What the report can include
- Executive summary of findings.
- Subject details and known identifiers.
- Address, contact and location indicators.
- Business and entity links.
- Social media and online footprint summary.
- Public record and open-source findings.
- Asset, property or lifestyle indicators where lawfully available.
- Chronology of relevant events or online activity.
- Evidence screenshots, source details and notes.
- Gaps, limitations and recommended next steps.
Lawful, ethical and discreet
RQI does not conduct unlawful access, hacking, password compromise, spyware installation, unauthorised account access or illegal surveillance. Desktop investigations are conducted using lawful sources, authorised information and professional investigative methods.
We also understand that desktop enquiries can involve sensitive personal, workplace, legal, family and commercial information. Confidentiality and proportionality are central to the way we work.
- No hacking or unauthorised access.
- No unlawful use of private information.
- No spyware or illegal device monitoring.
- No misleading claims about guaranteed outcomes.
- Clear limitations where information cannot be verified.
Common desktop investigation triggers
Many matters start with limited information. A desktop investigation can help determine whether there is enough evidence to justify further action.
You need to find someone
A person has moved, stopped responding, changed contact details or needs to be located for legal, business, personal or investigative reasons.
You need to check a claim
A statement, insurance claim, employment history, business claim or financial hardship claim does not appear to match available information.
You need to understand a person’s background
You need lawful background enquiries before litigation, employment decisions, business dealings, debt recovery or risk assessment.
You need social media evidence
Online material may assist with a legal, workplace, insurance, family, fraud or private investigation and needs to be captured before it disappears.
You suspect hidden business activity
A person may be operating a business, working cash jobs, using another entity, trading online or presenting a different lifestyle to what has been claimed.
You need to plan surveillance
Desktop enquiries can identify likely locations, routines, vehicles, associates, worksites, online indicators and the most efficient surveillance strategy.
Examples of matters suitable for RQI
- A law firm needs to locate a person or prepare background material before proceedings.
- An insurer needs early intelligence before approving surveillance or a factual investigation.
- A business needs to check whether a contractor, employee or debtor is linked to other entities.
- A workplace investigation requires social media review and online evidence preservation.
- A private client needs information about a person’s online presence, aliases or background.
- A fraud matter requires business links, asset indicators, lifestyle clues and public record review.
- A government or council matter requires desktop intelligence before field enquiries commence.

Frequently asked questions
What is a desktop investigation?
A desktop investigation is a structured investigation conducted through lawful searches, public records, open-source intelligence, online research, database checks and document review before any field work is undertaken.
Can a desktop investigation locate someone?
It can often identify address indicators, contact points, business links, online activity or other leads that may assist in locating a person. Results depend on the information available and whether the person is actively avoiding detection.
Is a desktop investigation cheaper than surveillance?
Usually, yes. Desktop enquiries are often a cost-effective first step before committing to surveillance, travel, interviews or field enquiries.
Can you access someone’s criminal history?
No. RQI cannot simply access a person’s criminal history. In Queensland, a criminal history or National Police Certificate is generally applied for by the individual concerned, with identity verification and consent requirements. A Queensland “copy of own” criminal history is released only to the individual concerned, or to their legal representative with the individual’s consent.
What RQI can do is conduct lawful background enquiries using open-source information, publicly available court material where accessible, business records, online material and information lawfully supplied by the client. If a formal police check is required, the person concerned should complete the proper police check process or provide written consent through an appropriate lawful pathway.
Can you get vehicle registration owner details from a number plate?
No. RQI cannot simply obtain the registered owner’s name or address from a vehicle registration number. Queensland’s public registration check can confirm certain vehicle details, but it does not provide registered owner information.
Vehicle owner information is protected personal information. In appropriate circumstances, a person may need to use official pathways such as a Transport and Main Roads release of information application, police report, insurer process, legal process, subpoena or other authorised request. RQI can assist with lawful vehicle-related enquiries, evidence preservation, public registration status checks where available, PPSR-style enquiries where a VIN is known, and investigation strategy, but we do not unlawfully access protected registration records.
Can you do social media investigations?
Yes. RQI can review and preserve publicly available social media material relevant to legal, workplace, insurance, private, fraud and factual investigation matters.
Do you access private databases?
RQI uses lawful and appropriate information sources. Some searches may involve authorised databases, public records, open-source information or information supplied by the client. We do not access information unlawfully.
What happens after the desktop investigation?
RQI can provide a report, briefing note or evidence summary. Depending on the findings, the next step may be surveillance, field enquiries, interviews, legal referral, workplace action or no further action.
Need a desktop investigation?
If you need to locate a person, check a background, preserve online evidence, review a claim, identify business links or conduct early investigation enquiries, RQI can assist with discreet, lawful and evidence-based desktop investigation support.
