When Should You Engage an External Investigator?

Not every workplace complaint requires an external investigator. Some matters can be managed internally through HR, line management, or existing workplace processes.

However, there are times when engaging an independent external investigator is the safest and most appropriate option.

An external investigator may be required where:

  • The allegations are serious
  • Senior staff or managers are involved
  • There is a real or perceived conflict of interest
  • Internal relationships may affect the outcome
  • The matter involves bullying, harassment, fraud, misconduct, or governance concerns
  • The organisation needs a process that can withstand external scrutiny

In regional communities, independence is especially important. Workplaces are often closely connected. People may know each other personally, socially, or through family and community networks. Even where no actual bias exists, the perception of bias can damage confidence in the outcome.

An external investigator provides a neutral process focused on evidence, fairness, and defensible findings.

A good investigation should clearly identify:

  • What allegations are being examined
  • What evidence has been considered
  • What witnesses were interviewed
  • What limitations exist
  • Whether findings are supported by evidence

Engaging an external investigator is not about escalating conflict. It is about protecting the integrity of the process and giving all parties confidence that the matter has been handled fairly.

At Regional Queensland Investigations, we assist organisations across regional Queensland with independent workplace investigations, misconduct enquiries, fraud investigations, governance reviews, and sensitive complaint matters.
