Its a “travesty of justice” Katy Perry’s lawyer has labelled the verdict on her copyright suit. Katy Perry’s music label has been ordered to pay a total of $2.78 million (around $4 million AUD) in damages for the 2013 hit “Dark Horse” as it was found that it breached the beat of Christian rapper Flame’s 2008 song “Joyful Noise”.
Perry did not write the song but the writers of the song dispute the claim and view the verdict as a “travesty of justice” and go on to say that “There is no infringement There was no access or substantial similarity.”
A music expert during the trial did point out that both songs use descending minor scales in a basic rhythm, one which is common to many trap beats and that “No one should be able to own these core building blocks for the good of all past, present and future art.”
So the question in regards to copyright law in the music industry must really answer the underlying question that if every musician is using basic building blocks then the alphabet of music that should be available to everyone,” according to Katy Perrys lawyer – Christine Lepera
